Legionella Bacteria

Legionella Control

Where conventional biocides and temperature control have fallen short, Klarolaks™ delivers consistent, measurable results – penetrating biofilm, maintaining efficacy in hot water systems, and achieving non-detectable Legionella counts.

Why Legionella Persists Despite Standard Treatment

Sodium hypochlorite degrades rapidly at elevated temperatures, loses efficacy above pH 7.5, and fails to penetrate the biofilm that protects Legionella from disinfection. Repeated shock dosing can temporarily reduce counts but rarely eliminates re-colonisation — particularly in complex or ageing systems where corrosion, scale deposits and biofilm already exist.

Klarolaks™ maintains biocidal activity across a wide pH range even at elevated temperatures and is proven to break down and remove existing biofilm, rather than simply suppress surface contamination.

Case Studies

Healthcare

NHS Trust

Overview:

Frequent positive Legionella Pneumophila SG1 results were recorded despite regular maintenance, temperature control and sodium hypochlorite flushing. Aging infrastructure was compounding the problem.

Result:

After using Klarolaks™ Legionella counts reduced from over 50,000 CFU/L to non-detectable across all monitored buildings. Consistent disinfectant residuals were maintained throughout without requiring repeated shock treatments.

Offshore

Offshore Barge Accommodation

Overview:

Six confirmed cases of Legionella Pneumophila SG1 were identified in a marine facility's potable water system. Emergency evacuation and system disinfection was required, resulting in HSE investigation and negative international media coverage.

Result:

Klarolaks™ was used for compliance cleaning and disinfection. Legionella non-detectable at all six sample points. Operations safely resumed.

Healthcare

Respiratory Centre

Persistent Legionella contamination over 12 months in a centre treating vulnerable patients. Temperature control and system flushing proved ineffective. Counts up to 900 CFU/L.

Overview:

Result:

All 10 sample point returned non-detectable results by month four. Operations safely resumed across all wards.

Continuous dosing of a competitor product at 1,200 kg per annum was failing to control TVCs across multiple outlets. High delivery frequency and cost was also an issue.

Overview:

Result:

TVCs brought under control. Annual chemical usage reduced from 1,200 kg to 94.8 kg. Deliveries reduced by 50% with a 57% reduction in chemical expenditure.
